Is there any evidence that urinary levels of oxalates above the GPL OAT reference range have clinical significance in patients without oxalate kidney stones or vulvodynia? Could they just have a high oxalate diet and be good at elimination?

    Barry,
Levels above 90 are associated with genetic hyperoxaluria conditions. However, even very high levels (in the hundreds) can be related to a high oxalate diet. The test doesn’t define kidney stones or vulvodynia, that has to happen clinically, but having high levels long-term will increase the risk for kidney stone and other issues.

The clinical significance has to come from clinical correlation based on the individuals symptoms, along with a high levels. I don’t believe every person with high oxalates needs to do some intensive low oxalate program. Sometimes just a modification in diet is enough.

    I hope this helps.
