Humic Acid

    Hi Dr Woeller,

Can Humic Acid be used by itself or in conjunction with other agents to remove heavy metals and/or other toxins from the body?

And is there a difference between “humic” and “fulvic” acid?

    Michael,
Humic acid and fulvic acid in nature are part of humus which is organic matter of soil, peat and constituents of streams, lakes and oceans. Fulvic acids has a smaller molecular weight and is felt to provide minerals to cells because it can pass through the cell membrane. Humic acid is larger and apparently cannot. I don’t know all of the mechanisms for these acids and their chelation abilities. They likely are complementary, but I wouldn’t solely rely on them for metal removal purposes.

Gotcha. Makes sense. So, based on that, humic acid would likely be effective for use in the fluid around cells, instead of in the cells themselves?

I have a report here about Humic acid’s anti-viral ability, but vague info about it being used as part of a metal detox program. Perhaps it can be helpful for an overall detox but not specifically metals.

    Michael,
I think it likely has more of an effect in the digestive system. It binds to glyphosate for example. I am not sure of its absorption.
