    I found something that was very interesting: The Klaire Mitochondria Formula contains malic and succinic acid. Do you know of any reason why they would include those ingredients in a mitochondrial supplement, and would it skew OAT reports?

    Michael,
    Malic acid is the 7th conversion step in the Kreb Cycle. Its the last step that produces NADH which enters the complex 1 of the Electron Transport Chain. The NADH (and FADH2) both carry hydrogens to the ECT to help maintain electron gradients which propels the ultimate formation of ATP. NADH enters at step 1 (complex 1 of the ECT). Succinic is linked to step 2 or complex 2 of the ECT. In both steps, Ubiquinol is present to act as an electron transporter.

    P.S. I don’t know how much of each would need to be taken to effect the OAT, but its possible the malic acid or succinic might appear elevated.

    I guess I need to understand more about what the succinic and malic markers mean in this context.

    Does an elevated malic or succinic marker mean that they are not being converted, which is why when they are high it shows a mitchondrial malfunction?

    And based on what you said, how much does ubiquinol supplementation help correct this?

    Michael,
    I emailed Dr. Pratt at Great Plains. He is one of their biochemist and feels that supplements containing Malic acid or Succinic acid would affect the OAT markers.

    Ubiquinol is within the ECT. In fact, its found both in complex I, II and III as an electron transported. The ECT is all about creating an electron gradient and pumps H+ across the inner mitochondrial membrane to the intramembrane space between the outer membrane and inner membrane. I think the correction comes about by allowing more forward flow of electrons and hydrogen within the ECT.

    The Malic elevates because its conversion enzyme gets inhibited or damage and the same with succinic. There may be other reasons biochemically too within the ECT and transfer mechanism between the kerb cycle and ECT.

    P.S. If I could go back to college one of things I would study is biochemistry. There is a lot of layers to it.
